Photography is a ritual.
Walking: a meditation; a beating drum.
A click: the ring of a gong.
Starting on the 29th of February - a leap into the unknown and a roughly planned epic road trip. But the year was 2020 - when the world as we knew it came to an abrupt pause.
In place of a thrilling expedition the trip took a turn into uncharted waters. Instead of travelling, we bedded down in a quiet Mexican fishing town and waited for the changes to blow through.
Listless, biding time, hope in heart, my camera became an anchor and a clock. Afternoons were ritually paced out, observing the strange stillness that descended in an unfamiliar place.
Watching the tide roll in day after day, fruit ripening on a tree, shadows circling a lone cactus, I heard nature’s slow crackle and pop replace the clamour of human bustle.
We hoped we would emerge into a brand new world. But after the pause, I wonder did we stop long enough to change the way we move forward?
